Do Not Read:

Books May Lead You to Think...

As long as humans have sought to communicate, others have sought to prevent them. Every day someone tries to restrict or control what can be said, written, sung, or broadcast. Almost every idea ever thought has proved objectionable to one person or another, and almost everyone has sometimes felt the world would be a better place if only "so and so" would go away.

Perhaps because of their ubiquity, books, especially public and school library books, are among the most visible targets. Books are hardly the only target of would-be censors, however. Free expression is constantly challenged in the arts, in broadcast media, and on the Internet.

What's at this site:

These pages comprise an extensive, organized, and in most cases annoted directory of Internet and print resources on various aspects of censorship and free expression. If you have a fast Internet connection, you can view all the resources in one file. If you have a slower connection, or are primarily interested in one aspect of censorship, you can select from the menu on the right or from the links below.

As this site is basically a directory of online resources, it works best as a Web page with "live" links. If you wish to print it out, please let me know--if there is enough interest, I can create a printable version in Adobe's Portable Document Format (.pdf).

Print Resources
A very selective bibliography of books and articles which I have found interesting or useful in my research. Most of these will be available in libraries in the U.S. Ask about interlibrary loan if your library does not have the items you need.

I used to accept suggestions and questions via email. Regrettably, the relentless assault of spammers has made my old email address all but unusable. Hence, I have "retired" the address George "at" GeorgeSuttle.com. If you wish to contact me with questions or suggestions, please do so by writing to censorship "at" GeorgeSuttle.com. You will, of course, need to exchange the "at" symbol for the word.
